Perfect Portions for Catering: How Much to Serve?
Figuring out how much food to serve at an event can be tricky. Too little and you risk disappointing your guests; too much and you might end up with waste. We’ve put together a straightforward guide to help you get it right and ensure your guests leave satisfied.
Here’s what you need to know:
Pre-Dinner Nibbles
- Aim for 3-5 pieces per guest.
Cocktail Party
- Plan for 4-6 pieces per person per hour if the finger food is the main meal.
- Serve more pieces in the first 2 hours, and taper off after that.
- Remember, meat and fried snacks tend to be more filling.
- For longer parties or larger guest lists, offer a wider variety of finger foods.
Dessert
- Provide 1 slice of cake, tart, or pavlova per person.
- Alternatively, offer 2 mini desserts (like cream puffs or mini eclairs) or 150 grams of ice cream per person.
- If offering two types of dessert, cut the amount of each in half.
This guide is a starting point, and while it’s basic, it should help keep your guests happy and avoid waste.
