Slab Cake Sizes, Dimensions and Servings: Complete Guide

Slab Cake Sizes, Dimensions and Servings: Complete Guide

Last updated: 7 August 2026

A slab cake is a large, rectangular cake designed to be cut into individual portions for birthdays, morning teas, functions and catering.

At Padstow Food Service, a standard full slab is approximately 30 cm × 40 cm, while a standard half slab is approximately 30 cm × 20 cm, unless a particular product states otherwise.

Slab cakes make serving a crowd straightforward. They are easy to portion, available in a broad selection of flavours and can be kept frozen so you only thaw what you need.

Padstow Food Service keeps slab cakes in stock and supplies them frozen unless you ask us to thaw one for you. Order online, by telephone or from our Padstow factory outlet. We are open to everyone, and no ABN is required.

Full Slab vs Half Slab Cake Sizes and Servings

The best size depends on the number of guests and how large you want each portion to be. The table below gives a practical comparison for standard cakes; always check the individual product description because some cakes are pre-sliced or have a product-specific yield.

Cake size Dimensions Generous portions Smaller catering pieces
Full slab 30 cm × 40 cm Approximately 32 Approximately 70–72
Half slab 30 cm × 20 cm Approximately 15–16 Approximately 30-32

These figures are guides, not a guarantee for every product. Pre-sliced cakes and slices may have their own stated count—for example, some products are supplied in 14- or 15-piece formats. Portion yield also depends on the shape and size of each cut.

How to Cut a Frozen Slab Cake

Cutting the cake while it is still frozen helps it hold its shape and gives you cleaner, more consistent portions.

  1. Remove the plastic wrap while the cake is frozen.
  2. Dip a sharp knife in hot water.
  3. Dry the blade, then cut the cake into the required portions.
  4. Reheat and clean the knife between cuts for neater edges.
  5. Cover unused frozen portions and return them to the freezer immediately.

Do not refreeze any portions that have already thawed. Always follow the storage and serving directions on the physical product label.

How to Thaw a Slab Cake Safely

Whole full slab

If thawing a whole full slab, place it in the refrigerator overnight. Keep it below 5°C.

Individual slices

After cutting while frozen, thaw each slice in the refrigerator below 5°C for a minimum of 30 minutes before serving.

All cakes are supplied frozen unless you request that Padstow Food Service thaw them. Product-specific handling instructions take priority, so check the label before storage, cutting or service.
