A Brief History of Nescafé Blend 43 in Australia

A Brief History of Nescafé Blend 43 in Australia

Prior to the 1940s, there was almost no coffee market in Australia, which may seem strange given that coffee is practically a national religion these days.

Back then everyone just drank tea! In fact Tea was so popular in Australia, we were the world's highest per capita tea users for a brief period in the 1920s, even exceeding the British!

It should come as no surprise, then, that when instant coffee first appeared in Australia, it appeared futuristic and was an instant success (pun intended).

The launch of Nescafe Blend 43 on April 1st 1938 was aided by a massive marketing campaign that included a "count the beans" contest with the winner receiving a 43-day global tour! It was as though two of the most exciting modern marvels (instant coffee and jet aircraft) had fused!

The name Blend 43 comes from the fact that one cup of instant coffee required 43 coffee beans and was first sold as "Blend 43" in Australia and New Zealand In 1947.

Today, NESCAFÉ BLEND 43 is proudly roasted and blended in Gympie, Australia, using 100% Sustainable Natural Coffee Beans and as at the last year, the facility had produced about 2 billion cups of NESCAFÉ BLEND 43, with over 360 million cups consumed by Aussie workers (in workplaces) across Australia.
